Recreating Memories in Silk

As she held her grandmother’s old saree in her hand, she couldn’t help but wonder about the many memories that the saree would’ve borne witness to. After all, only the happiest and most auspicious of occasions would be deemed worthy enough of wearing a Kanjeevaram. While the saree had worn down with age, its timeless beauty remained intact, reminding her as to why this was one of her grandmother’s favourites. She thought to herself how amazing it would be if she could somehow capture the essence of this saree, recreate it in all its glory. What a wonderful way it would be to honour the memory of her grandmother and what a precious heirloom it would be to pass down to her own grandchildren someday.

Such is the tale of how Ms. Poojitha approached us to remake one of her grandmother’s old Kanjeevaram, a request which we were more than happy to fulfil. It was a gorgeous saree, adorned with checks in the summery colours of red and yellow. With the design of the saree closely resembling one of our own creations, it was decided that the vivid colours of the old saree would be recreated in the same design. We had even managed to document a few steps in the process and had it sent over to our client. As a token of appreciation, we had also woven Poojitha’s name onto the saree, since we knew this would be a special one. Once the saree had reached her, she was absolutely thrilled with just how beautifully it had turned out.

At Tulsi Weaves, we consider it a privilege to be able to make such dreams come true. It is this ethos of restoring, preserving and reviving that is at the heart of everything we do. From infusing the spun silk yarns with the rich colours to spreading them out with care, from graphing and punching the intricate designs to bringing them to life by the skilled hands of the weaver, every step in the saree-weaving process is a work of art. A saree is not just a garment, it is a part of our heritage, extension of our culture, carrying hours of dedication and passion in every thread.
